"Much has been done, but much remains to be done. We look to the future with renewed strength to continue the mission of providing quality eye care and hope that some of what we have learned will be useful to other eye care workers around the world."

Dear Friends,

Happy 40th Birthday to you and every member of our Aravind family! Dr. V’s words of hope and humility ring true today, just as they did in 1976.

Aravind is well-known for many things – unparalleled efficiency, extraordinary volumes, high quality outcomes -- the Harvard business case, taught throughout the world, holds Aravind up as the model of successful social enterprise. Since Dr. V started with 11 beds in Madurai, India, we have treated 48 million patients, with better results and at a fraction of the cost of US and UK eye hospitals. No wonder Aravind has been called the McDonald’s of eye care.

But it is all possible because of an unexpected ingredient -- compassion. The urgency to eliminate unnecessary blindness and end this form of human suffering drives all of the numbers.

At the heart of the Aravind Model is a recognition of the inherent dignity and respect due to each human being, regardless of their wealth, education, or station in life. At Aravind, we believe everyone deserves to see – and to be seen.

As we celebrate 40 years of service, another quote from Dr. V comes to mind. “When we grow in spiritual consciousness, we identify ourselves with all that is in the world. So there is no exploitation. It is ourselves we are helping. It is ourselves we are healing.”

Thank you for sharing Dr. V’s vision and journey.

Warmest regards,
The Board of Aravind Eye Foundation
Changing the future of childhood eye cancer with genetic testing.

On October 26, Dr. P. Namperumalsamy, Chairman Emeritus of Aravind Eye Care System, inaugurated the Retinoblastoma Genetics Testing Lab at the Aravind Medical Research Foundation, in Madurai, India.

Retinoblastoma is a fast-growing, often fatal, childhood cancer of one or both eyes. In many cases, someone in the family – parent, sibling or grandparent – already has had retinoblastoma. Understanding whether the disease is inherited is critical to the patient’s treatment and prognosis, but until now, genetic testing has been too expensive for most Indian families.

We are grateful to the Allene Reuss Foundation, the Sohum Foundation, and many individual donors who have funded the lab’s development. The lab will offer affordable genetic testing to patients in India and throughout the developing world.
Thank you to the Umberto Romano and Clorinda Romano Foundation for supporting Spectacles for Scholars

We are grateful to the Umberto Romano and Clorinda Romano Foundation for a generous grant to our Spectacles for Scholars program. Umberto Romano was a visionary American artist, sculptor, illustrator, and teacher, whose work is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum in New York, the Fogg Art Museum in Boston, and the Corcoran Gallery and Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.

What Is It Like to Volunteer at Aravind?
Every year, dozens of volunteers travel to India at their own expense to help us fulfill our mission of eliminating needless blindness. They experience firsthand the culture of Tamil Nadu, share their time and talents in many fields, and become part of our large, extended family.

Ross McKeachie is a comedian, an actor, a writer, and has a background in marketing and business. He spent eight weeks with Aravind creating business development materials for LAICO, Aravind’s healthcare consulting group and working on an employee engagement project
