Dear Friends,
This month, we celebrate the much-anticipated opening of Aravind Eye Hospital Chennai – a state-of-the-art facility, designed from the ground up for 21st century ophthalmology and offering every medical advance in eye care found in the world’s most renowned university hospitals.

But behind the technology and sophistication is Dr. V’s sincere devotion to the patient, a devotion that is shared by every member of the staff. And, that is what makes Aravind different. That is “value add” of our model. As Dr. Natchiar, one of the founding team members, puts it best: “When a nurse holds an elderly patient’s hand and leads her where she needs to go . . .that’s value addition.”

Thank you for your continuing support of Aravind’s mission. And, we hope you will visit the newest member of the Aravind family in Chennai.

Warmest regards,
The Board Members of the Aravind Eye Foundation

Inauguration of Aravind Eye Hospital – Chennai

Aravind Eye Hospital -- Chennai was inaugurated on September 29 with local dignitaries, international visitors, and Aravind’s senior management in attendance -- on the first day of operations, 337 patients received treatment.

Situated on the city’s Poonamallee High Road, the spacious, 700-bed hospital facility offers all the sub-specialties in ophthalmology and will serve as a center of excellence for treatment, training, and research in the region. Like all Aravind hospitals, Aravind-Chennai will be self-sustaining, while offering services for free or at steeply subsidized rates to the underprivileged. The physical environment and infrastructure reflect Aravind’s values: transparency, integrity, and compassionate care.
Thank you to Umberto Romano and Clorinda Romano Foundation for the gift of hope
This summer, Aravind received a grant from the Umberto Romano and Clorinda Romano Foundation to provide free treatment to patients with retinoblastoma (eye cancer) through our Ring of Hope program. Established in 2004, the Ring of Hope pays for treatment of patients suffering from ocular cancers, mostly children between the ages of 0 and 5 years. A full course of treatment – diagnostic tests, surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, genetic testing, and follow-up visits -- is well beyond the means of most Indian parents. This grant will truly bring hope to 15 patients and their families.
Warby Parker and Aravind team up to provide Spectacles 4 Scholars
We are pleased to partner with Warby-Parker to provide free eye glasses to school children as part of our Spectacles 4 Scholars program. Spectacles for Scholars provides free vision screening and eye glasses to school children, between ages 5 and 17, from underprivileged families in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry, India. Aravind’s unique All-Classroom Teacher method of screening ensures higher accuracy of diagnosis and compliance, because classroom teachers know their students best and can detect vision problems effectively.

Warby Parker is a transformative lifestyle brand with a lofty objective: to offer designer eyewear at a revolutionary price while leading the way for socially conscious businesses. We are deeply grateful for their support.

Congratulations to Dr. Alfred Sommer, winner of the 2017 Dr. G. Venkataswamy Oration Award

This year’s Dr. G. Venkataswamy Oration Award was presented to Dr. Alfred Sommer, Dean Emeritus and Professor of Epidemiology and International Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the prevention of needless blindness in the developing world.

Dr. Sommer’s landmark research on vitamin A is credited with saving the lives of millions of children around the world. He proved that a 4-cent dose of vitamin A not only prevented and cured eye disease, but also dramatically reduced childhood deaths from infectious disease. Because of his work, the World Health Organization, UNICEF and their partners now annually provide more than 400 million vitamin A supplements to children around the world, saving hundreds of thousands of lives each year.
