New rural vision center opens in Thurvarankurichi – ever closer to our goal of 150 centers!

Rural Vision Centers provide essential eye care to rural India – there are 10,000 ophthalmologists in India, mostly in urban areas, serving 1.3 billion people.    One doctor for every 130,000 people, compared to one doctor for every 16,500 people in the U.S.

Aravind’s telemedicine model means that even patients living in rural areas can “see” a doctor.  A trained technician performs all basic tests and shares the results with a doctor at an Aravind hospital.  The doctor then reviews everything with the patient via the Internet and recommends any further treatment.

We are grateful to the Aravind Eye Foundation board members for personally funding the vision center in Thurvarankurichi.
